Troubleshoot a Missing Camera from the Browser

The following article describes two methods for troubleshooting a missing camera from the browser on a Mac. If you try to record a video from the browser and your camera will not show up as an available option, then follow one of the methods below.

Method 1: Terminal

1. Press command + spacebar to get to the Spotlight search

2. Type in "Terminal", and press Enter

3. In the terminal, type in the following message: sudo killall VDCAssistant

4. Press Enter, enter your password, and press enter again

5. Refresh your browser and the issue should be resolved

Method 2: Activity Monitor

1. Press command + spacebar to get to the Spotlight search

2. Type in "Activity Monitor", and press Enter

3. In the search bar in the top right of the activity monitor, type VDC

4. Click on VDCAssistant, and the activity should now be highlighted in blue

5. In the top left, click the button with an X on it. That will stop the VDCAssistant

6. Refresh your browser and the issue should be resolved
